Today was the day of arrival for students in China to begin the field course. Some Chinese students arrived at Pudong International Airport from another flight and others traveled by either car or metro.Pudong is part of greater metropolitan Shanghai, lying east of the Huangpu River and across from the city centre of Shanghai in Puxi. Pudong has over 5 million inhabitants, contributing to the total Shanghai population that exceeds 24 million people, just 10 million shy of the total population of Canada!
A few Canadian students arrived earlier in China to explore Shanghai, while others arrived at the airport directly from Canada. Once we had all assembled (by a Starbucks no less!), Dr. Wang gave a short introduction in the airport about what everyone should expect for the next few days. After everyone had met, students and professors took an approximately 2.5 hour bus ride to the Yangtze Environmental Specimen Bank in the city of Jiaxing.
Students had dinner in the main building of this Specimen Bank. Students were assigned roommates for the duration of the trip and also assigned their rooms. Some pairs of students were assigned rooms in a hotel just of the campus site, while others stayed in the residence of the Yangtze River Environmental Specimen Bank. Students stayed in their room and caught up on some sleep from the long day of travel – but we are all excited to be here!
