It is the National Day of China and we are in Canada. Although I cannot celebrate it with my family and friends, I still want to say happy birthday to my motherland and wish all my friends a happy vacation. We join in an ecology class with the students from Queen’s University and spend the whole day studying some basic sampling methods with them.
The first module I take is the bird section and a TA teaches us how to catch birds using nets and the recording of their tweet. Unfortunately, the temperature is quite low and the wind is so strong today that few birds are willing to come out. No birds have been caught finally and we get a little bit sad. But at least, we see some birds like Blue Jay, chickadee（pic 1） and wood pecker, which are quite common in North America but quite rare in China.
After lunch, we join in the small mammal module. In this section, we are required to wait at the specific spots to watch the animal behaviour. We cast some seeds on the plat waiting for chipmunks coming. Unfortunately, no chipmunk shows up. But we see some gray squirrels and Blue Jays coming and stealing some of the seeds. It is said that Tiantian just finds a chipmunk and chases it a long way till she find its shelter.
The last module is insect section which is a little boring. We get to identify some insects and then play some games like Scrabble. We listen to a seminar after dinner which is about bird migration but I am just so tired to get myself focus on it, although it is actually a field I am very interested in.
We live in the Elbow Lake this night, which is a more quiet and peaceful place. No game or activity this night and we all get to bed quite early.
